info

Lulendo, from Angola, is a very endearing singer, whose voice of tenor in falsetto, of an absolute correctness, evokes often that of Papa Wemba, that he accompanied as a back vocalist. As a teenager he has frequented the religious choirs of Luanda, which seems to be reflected in the very refined harmonization of the sound of this album. But Lulendo is also one of the few musicians of his generation who centers his music on a traditional African instrument: lamellophone likembe (also called sanza or quissange). He learned to play with his grandfather, who also introduced him to the animist rituals of the Bakongo. Lulendo makes his own model of likembe, with thirteen metallic arched blades, possibly amplified by means of a small microphone fixed on the rectangular box.
