Spartenza is a bridge over the Mediterranean between Southern Europe and North Africa. If the word, Sicilian, means a separation, it is nevertheless an encounter that the record celebrates. It is the meeting of Maura Guerrera, a Sicilian from Marseilles, and Malik Ziad, an Algerian from both shores. It is among the songs and rhythms of the Sicilian peasant tradition and from collector's recordings that Maura Guerrera has selected the ten tracks that make up the album. Her timbre, imbued with the vocal tradition of her native island, naturally marries the mandolin and guembri of Malik Ziad. At the crossroads of academism and its transmission in popular practices, Spartenza's musical colour embodies the travelling spirit of these pieces through the centuries. |
